LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? The 5th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team scored the first three goals of the third period to open up a 10-5 lead en route to a 12-8 win over 12th-ranked Navy in the NCAA National Championship Consolation game. The win caps UCSD's season with a 26-6 record, the 26 wins setting a new school record for victories. Ty Lackey led the Tritons with five goals, while Nestor Dordoni added three scores and A.J. Kotanjian also scored twice. Daniel Garcia and Jesse Casellini also scored in the win.
The Tritons led 3-2 after the first quarter as Lackey netted two scores while Dordoni added the other Triton goal.
Four different Tritons scored in the second quarter as Dordoni, Garcia, Casellini and Lackey each tallied a goal and UCSD led 7-5 at the break.
UCSD opened up the game in the third as Dordoni (5:01), Kotanjian (2:32 and 1:41) opened up a 10-5 advantage before the Midshipmen finally got on the board in the period to make the score 10-6 UCSD through three.
Navy did not go quietly, scoring unanswered goals at 7:08 and 3:04, coming within 10-8 with three minutes to play. UCSD then turned to Lackey who put the game out of reach with scores at 2:33 and 1:48, good for the 12-8 UCSD win.
