LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's basketball team made all six of its free throws and got a layup from junior Clint Allard over the final 52 seconds of the second half to hold off visiting Cal State Stanislaus by a 76-72 score on Saturday night in RIMAC Arena. With the victory the Tritons improve to 3-3 on the year and even up their CCAA record at 1-1. The Warriors fall to 4-4 on the season, 1-1 in league action.
Sophomore Shane Poppen led the UCSD offense on the night, scoring 16 points while Allard added 13 points and four assists. Freshman Jordan Lawley scored 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the floor.
Sophomore Darryl Lawlor added 11 points to round out the UCSD players in double figure scoring. Freshman Kelvin Kim handed out a game-high five assists to go along with his nine points and four rebounds.
Heath Colvin led the CSUS offense with 16 points while Nic Pederson and Calvin Westbrook added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Both teams shot very well from the floor on the night as the Tritons made 54.2% of their shots while the Warriors connected on 51.3% from the floor. CSUS made 27 of 32 from the charity stripe while UCSD kept pace by making 19 of 25. Both teams made five 3-pointers on the night.
The Tritons held a slight 24-22 margin in rebounds and both teams committed 16 turnovers.
UCSD will take a break from competition next week for Final Exams, but will return to the court on Sunday, December 10, hosting Hawaii Pacific at 12 p.m. in RIMAC Arena. Following that contest, head coach Bill Carr's squad will resume its CCAA schedule with a 7:30 p.m. game at Cal State Dominguez Hills on December 20th at 7:30 p.m.
