UCSD Falters in League Home Opener, Loses to CSUS 79-75

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's basketball team dropped its home league opener to Cal State Stanislaus on Friday night by a 79-75 score in RIMAC Arena. With the loss the Tritons fall to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Warriors improve to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in league action.

 

Poor shooting doomed the Tritons on the night, shooting only 40.7% from the floor, including a 5-for-19 performance from long range. UCSD also struggled from the charity stripe making only 22-of-37 foul shot attempts.

 

The Warriors didn't shoot much better, making only 9-of-27 from the 3-point line en route to a 39.7% night overall from the floor. CSUS managed to make 20 of their 32 foul shots on a night when 52 total fouls were called.

 

Freshman Henry Patterson led the Triton offense with 18 points and seven rebounds before fouling out with 5:42 remaining in the contest. Clint Allard added 14 points, most of which came from his 9-for-10 night at the foul line. Freshman Shane Poppen added 10 points while Drew Spaventa added a spark off the bench with five points and a game-high nine rebounds in 18 minutes of play.

 

Marcus Martinez led four Warrior players in double figure scoring with his 13 points. Dominique Pennix and Joel Stallworth each added 12 while Kavin Young scored 11.

 

UCSD returns to action on Saturday evening with a 7:30 p.m. matchup with Chico State in RIMAC Arena. Cal State Stanislaus travels to take on Cal State San Bernardino tomorrow evening. That game is also slated for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
