Tritons Come Up Short Against No. 3 Pepperdine

LA JOLLA, Calif. -  The UC San Diego men's volleyball team dropped a 30-28, 30-19, 30-25 decision to No. 3 Pepperdine on Friday night in RIMAC Arena.  The Waves remain undefeated at 5-0, 5-0 MPSF, while the Tritons drop to 0-6, 0-4 MPSF.  UCSD led late in the first game and pushed Pepperdine to the end, falling by two points.  For the match, UCSD was led by Brenden Bowe with 10 kills while Jon Daze added nine.  Garret Smith had eight kills on a .357 attack percentage.  Pepperdine was led by Andy Hein with 15 kills against one attack error.

 

Game one was close throughout as UCSD led 15-13 after a Bowe kill.  Neither team would pull away from one another as the teams were tied at 28-28.  Two UCSD attack errors ended the game in favor of the Waves, 30-28.

 

In game two, the Tritons tied the game 8-8 after a Pepperdine attack error.  Tied at 9-9, Pepperdine scored 11 of the next 14 points to take command as UCSD would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.  The Waves closed out game two on a Paul Carroll service ace, 30-19.

 

The Tritons played well in game three, forcing Pepperdine into a timeout after a Smith and Daze block, giving UCSD the 21-17 lead.  Pepperdine closed quickly to tie it at 21-21 after a Hein kill.  With the Waves ahead 25-24, Pepperdine scored four straight points for the comfortable lead.  Parfitt put down the winning kill for Pepperdine at 30-25.

 

The UC San Diego men's volleyball team will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 28 when it hosts 13th-ranked USC at 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
