UCSD Drops Road Contest to Cal State San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's basketball team dropped a 64-42 decision to 6-time defending CCAA Champion Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday night in Coussoulis Arena. With the loss the Tritons fall to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in league play while the Coyotes improve to 5-6 overall and 4-1 in conference action.

 

The Tritons made only 5-of-17 shots in the first half leading to a 29-15 deficit at intermission. Despite making 12-of-21 in the second half, UCSD was still outscored by eight points en route to its largest margin of defeat on the season.

 

Freshman A.J. Maulhardt led the Tritons offensively, scoring eight points and grabbing five rebounds in only 13 minutes of play. Fellow rookie Shane Poppen added seven while freshmen Darryl Lawlor and Henry Patterson chipped in with six and five points, respectively.

 

Curtis Williams scored a game-high 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the floor for the Coyotes. Chet Johnson went 4-for-4 from the field, including 2-for-2 from long range to account for his 10 points.

 

UCSD out-rebounded CSUSB by a 27-26 margin on the evening but committed 21 turnovers, seven more that the Coyotes.

 

The Tritons return to action on Saturday evening, taking on Cal State Monterey Bay at 7:30 p.m. in The Kelp Bed on the CSUMB campus.
