BIG HOME SLATE AWAITS 11th-RANKED WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SQUAD
Now 12-2 overall and 4-1 in the CCAA after snagging a pair of conference road victories last week, the Women's Volleyball team returns to RIMAC Arena where it will host Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-7/1-5) Friday and undefeated and 21st-ranked Cal Poly Pomona (14-0/6-0) a night later...Coach Tom Black's club is No. 11 in the nation and tied for third in the CCAA.
Shaking off a slow start, UCSD put away host Chico State, 3-1 (17-30, 30-21, 30-26, 30-22) Friday night...Versatile outside hitter Nicole Courtney blasted 20 kills, had 13 digs and three aces to lead the Tritons while junior middle blocker Brianna Koche chipped in with 12 kills...Junior setter Kristin Halvorsen came came of the bench to direct the comeback, dishing out 35 kills.
Halvorsen was back at the controls the next afternoon (36 assists) as the Tritons took a 3-1 (30-23, 30-20, 28-30, 30-21) decision at Cal State Stanislaus, always a difficult CCAA road locale...Courtney again supplied the majority of the firepower, accounting for 17 kills and five aces...Backcourt ace Laura Watkins had 29 digs and three aces while Koche hit double figures once more with 11 kills...UCSD held Stanislaus to a negative hitting percentage (-.006) for the match.
POLO EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO SEVEN; LONG BEACH STATE HERE SATURDAY
It will be UCSD vs. Long Beach State, Round Three, Saturday night at Canyonview Pool...Coach Denny Harper's 5th-ranked team is coming off a 5-0 week that pushed its win streak to seven straight, included a win over its toughest conference rival and a first place finish at the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest...The Tritons are now 11-2 and the No. 5 national ranking equals UCSD's best ever.
Friday night, the just under 1,100 fans shoe-horned into Canyonview Pool saw the Tritons topple defending WWPA champ and No. 10-ranked Loyola Marymount, 7-5...UCSD got off quickly as sophomore Adi Jerkovic scored a pair of unanswered first period goals...Senior Chris Eichholz found the net early in the second quarter and after LMU scored to make it 3-1, the Tritons were off to the races again, racking up three more goals (Chris Finegold, Jon Hopkins and Brandon Borso) and making it a five-goal differential...Two of the scores were the result of counter breakaways by Jerkovic and Borso...The Lions, however, refused to die...It was 6-2 at the break and after scoring the first three goals of the second half, LMU was down just 6-5 and the Tritons looked flat...But 30 seconds after the fifth Lion goal, junior Ty Lackey deposited an off speed shot from outside the seven-meter mark into the upper right hand corner that sewed things up.
The Tritons had little time to celebrate the LMU triumph as they were at the SD Airport at 5:45 AM the next morning to travel north to the Slugfest...The grueling schedule proved no problem Saturday as UCSD used a five-goal fourth quarter barrage to put away Santa Clara, 12-5, and then crushed Cal Lutheran, 17-1...Sunday, Harper & Co. scored six first period goals and downed No. 8 Long Beach State for the second time this season, 12-10...They closed out the tournament with a convincing, 16-6, rout of host UC Santa Cruz.
EASTERN TEST LOOMS FOR CROSS COUNTRY TEAM
Coach Ted Van Arsdale's Cross Country team goes cross country this week, heading to Bethlehem, PA for the annual Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University...UCSD will field nearly two full teams and compete in the invitational (top level) portion of the event where it will battle a slate of Division I and Division II squads...The women will run 6K and the men 8K.
Senior Mimi Hodgins will head the cast for the 12th-ranked UCSD women while the senior trio of Carl Lostrom, Chris Beetley-Hagler and Luke Sigmon are expected to pace the 20th-ranked Triton men.
MEN'S SOCCER CONTINUES SOLID PLAY; CCAA ROAD TRIP NEXT
Sporting a 5-1-1 record and now 2-1-1 in the CCAA, the Men's Soccer team will test itself on the road, visiting Sonoma State (3-5-1/1-2) and San Francisco State (6-3-1/2-1-1) this weekend...UCSD dropped out of the national rankings following its first loss of the year at Cal State L.A., Sept. 13.
After two overtime periods, the Tritons left Carson with a 1-1 tie against fourth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills Wednesday...UCSD is now 1-0-1 in its two encounters against Division II teams ranked in the top five nationally...Coach Derek Armstrong's unit had to come back in this one to emerge unscathed...The Toros scored first as Francisco Corona converted a penalty kick at 18:03...But less than two minutes into the second half, senior Jon Krupansky got the equalizer, turning a feed from Dustin Tannenhaus into his second goal of the season...UCSD was outshot, 17-10, on the day with senior Edward Ruhland making seven saves in the net.
Saturday, the Tritons rode the standard brilliance of midfielder Matt Davey and a steadfast defense to defeat visiting Cal Poly Pomona, 2-0...The first half was played at a frenetic pace and the second half more controlled, but either way, the Broncos never seriously threatened Ruhland who made just four saves...Thirty-five minutes into the game, the left-footed Davey corralled a deflected pass from teammate Tannenhaus and struck a right-footed laser into the lower right corner for the first goal of the game...Then, late in the second half, a pass from Krupansky got him free down the left side...After drawing goalie Thomas Ryan to him, Davey slid a textbook pass to freshman Devon Cook who buried his first collegiate goal into a virtually wide-open net
ROAD TRIP NEXT UP FOR 7-1 WOMEN'S SOCCER
The 20th-ranked Women's Soccer team stands 7-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the CCAA after sweeping a pair of conference contests last week...Now, the Tritons take to the road to face Sonoma State (2-6-1/1-2-1) and San Francisco State (2-5/1-3), two clubs that have proven dangerous in the past.
Playing some of its best soccer of the young season, UCSD seized a significant conference road win Wednesday, shutting out defending league titlist Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-0...Freshman Kelly Mayo got the Tritons on the scoreboard quickly, netting the first goal of her UC career at 4:18 with junior Alise Malley getting credit for the assist...The 1-0 ledger stood through halftime but leading scorer Megan Dickey collected her eighth goal of the season three minutes after the break, scoring unassisted...UCSD owned a 15-13 advantage in the shots column and freshman Mia Shirley had seven saves while picking up her first shutout.
UCSD made it three straight conference wins Saturday night, outlasting Cal Poly Pomona, 1-0, on the home pitch...Freshman Natasha Belak-Berger wrote much of the game story in a 3:38 span of the second half...At 51:07, she was hit with a questionable yellow card...Two minutes later, the feisty forward was knocked down in the box and converted a penalty kick for the evening's lone goal...Ninety seconds after scoring, she was done for the evening, accruing a second yellow card, meaning the Tritons were forced to play the final 35:15 a player short...McManus's charges responded tenaciously, playing most of the second half in their own end and fending off six Bronco corners down the stretch... Midfielder Heather Sugg was particularly tough, controlling the air and narrowly missing a shorthanded goal when she headed a shot off the left post in the late going...Despite being undermanned, the Tritons outshot CPP, 14-5...Freshman Mia Shirley made just two saves in recording the shutout.
GOLF TEAM OPENS UP AT WESTERN WASHINGTON TOURNAMENT
Coach Mike Wydra's Golf Team makes its 2005-06 debut at the 16-team Western Washington Invitational...The 54-hole tourney will be played at the Bellingham Golf & Country Club, starting today...The Tritons finished second at this event last year.
Wydra's five-man travel squad will be comprised of seniors Robbie Kramer, Justin Grant and Ryo Yamada and sophomores Luke Leveillee and Chris Hirahatake.
