Tritons Snap Losing Streak, Defeat Montreat College 70-58

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii - An 11-0 run late in the game gave UC San Diego the cushion it needed to defeat Montreat College, 70-58, in today's Coconut Coast Classic match-up. The win snaps the Tritons' 5-game losing streak.

The Classic continues on Tuesday at
2 p.m. when Embry-Riddle University faces SUNY-Potsdams in the Kekuaokalani Gymnasium. Host University of Hawaii at Hilo plays UCSD in the Classic's final game at 2 p.m. (Hawaii Time) on Wednesday, December 21.

Trailing by a point, a pair of free throws by Henry Patterson gave the Tritons (2-6) a one-point lead at the
11:26 mark of the second half. UCSD continued to ride that momentum with a 3-pointer by Peterson and jumpers from Patterson and Odioh Odiye over the next 90 seconds. Clint Allard's free throws ended the run.

The lead never dipped below four points and got as high as 15 before UCSD settled in with the 12-point victory. Peters led the Tritons with 19 points while Allard added 14 and Patterson had 13.

Montreat (5-4) was led by Tim Lewis with 23 points on 8 of 11 shooting from the field with 7 of 11 shooting from the free throw line. David Robinson added 10 points.

Following Wednesday's game against the Vulcans, UCSD will return to the mainland for a brief holiday break before returning to action on Tuesday, January 3 against Grand Canyon in RIMAC Arena. The 4 p.m. contest will be the Tritons' first home game of the season and is the first of three-straight at home as Bill Carr's squad will resume CCAA play on Friday and Saturday, January 6 and 7 against Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State, respectively. Both games are slated for 7:30 p.m. starts on the La Jolla campus.
