CHICAGO, ILL.- The UC San Diego women's fencing team returned home from a successful two day tournament hosted by Northwestern University. The women competed against 10 schools, winning eight of the 10 matches. They defeated Univ. of North Carolina 18-9, Lawrence 25-2, Cleveland State 24-3, Michigan 21-6, Michigan State 24-3, Wayne State 15-12, Detroit Mercy 23-4, and John Hopkins 24-3. Their two losses came from Northwestern University 10-17, and powerhouse Notre Dame 6-21.
Triton standout Chelsea Ambort (epee) defeated the 2005 NCAA Nationals gold medalist Anna Garina of Wayne State with a score of 5-2, and also bested silver medalist Amy Orlando of Notre Dame 5-2.
Solid performances were shown by all three squads contributing to a successful tournament. The epeeists were Ambort, Heather Stephenson, and Grace Bohn. The foilists were Jennifer Chun, Emily Lipoma, Zitin Kachru, and Laurel Yianilos. The women sabre fencers were Raelyn Jacobson, Esther Sosis, and Heather Bienenfeld.
UCSD is back in action on Jan. 28-29 at the West Coast Collegiate Team Invitational hosted by Arizona.
