POMONA, Calif. ? Sophomore Clint Allard scored a game-high 18 points and dished out six assists as the UC San Diego men's basketball team evened up its 2005-06 record at 1-1 with a 54-47 win at Pomona Pitzer on Tuesday night. The loss drops the Sagehens to 0-2 on the season.
Allard shot 50% from the floor, going 6-for-12 on the evening. He was 2-for-7 from long distance but made all four of his free throws. Junior Robby Peters was the only other UCSD player to notch double digit scoring, netting 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the floor.
Sophomore Drew Spaventa pulled down five rebounds for the Tritons while Peters and freshmen Henry Patterson and A.J. Maulhardt grabbed four apiece. Three of Patterson's four boards were on the offensive side.
Ed Wexler-Beron poured in 18 points for Pomona Pitzer in the loss while also pulling down a game-high five rebounds. Evan Flagg added eight points while David Knowles scored six.
As a team the Tritons managed to shoot only 42.6% from the floor on the evening but were able to hold their opponents to a less effective 41.9% mark. Pomona Pitzer out-rebounded UCSD by a 32-26 margin but committed 12 of the 21 turnovers in the game. The Tritons have committed only nine turnovers in each of their first two contests this season.
Head coach Bill Carr and his team returns to action on Friday evening, taking on Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time.
The game with the Antelopes will be the Tritons' final tuneup before California Collegiate Athletic Association play begins. UCSD will open up the CCAA campaign on the road at Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State L.A. on December 2 and 3, respectively. Both games are slated for 7:30 p.m. starts.
