No. 17 UCSD Falls to No. 22 CSUB 3-1

LA JOLLA, Calif.-  The 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team dropped a 30-24, 22-30, 30-19, 32-30 decision to 22nd-ranked Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday night.  The loss drops the Tritons to 18-6, 10-5 CCAA while the Roadrunners improve to 18-6, 11-3 CCAA.  UCSD was led by Kimberly Carpenter with 17 kills and Brianna Koche added 11 kills.  A trio of Tritons reached double figures in digs, led by Natalie Facchini with 19, Nicole Courtney with 17 and Laura Watkins with 15.  Both teams showed why they are the top teams in the conference when it comes to serving.  CSUB had 10 aces while UCSD tallied eight.  The Roadrunners were led by Jodi Hardin's 15 kills.

In game one, UCSD fell behind early, trailing 17-11.  Playing catch-up the rest of the way, UCSD managed to cut the deficit to 20-18.  UCSD would then come within one at 25-24 after a CSUB attack error.  UCSD then committed several errors after a CSUB kill as the Roadrunners took game one 30-24.

In game two, the Tritons raced out to the early lead, pushing to a 19-9 advantage.  The game would not get closer than six points the rest of the way and Carpenter tallied the last three kills for UCSD in the game, 30-22 Tritons.  UCSD hit .343 in the game.

With game three knotted at 12-12, CSUB scored seven unanswered points, the last two on aces by Erica Baldwin.  Baldwin finished the night with four aces.  The 19-12 deficit was too much for UCSD as the Roadrunners answered any possible scoring run the Tritons tried to make.  Morgan Reed put down the kill in game three 30-19 CSUB.

UCSD would try to force a game five and they looked strong early, extending a close game into a 15-11 lead after a Carpenter kill.  CSUB would come back to tie the game at 17-17 on a Reed kill.  UCSD's Watkins served up an ace to give the Tritons a small 22-19 lead, forcing CSUB into a timeout.  CSUB would put together another run to tie up the game at 26-26.  The Tritons would lead 30-29 and serve game point, but Sarah Norman put down a kill to even the score at 30-30.  Jodi Hardin then delivered a kill for the 31-30 lead.  The game would end as UCSD's attempt to tie the game went long, 32-20 CSUB.

With 15 digs, UCSD's Watkins moved into second place in the single-season digs school record book.  The senior now has 366 digs, trailing Leslie Punelli who tallied 397 in 2000.

UCSD is back in action on senior night as they host 9th-ranked Cal State L.A. on Friday, November 7.  First serve is set for 7:00 pm in RIMAC Arena.
