The 18
th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team swept Cal State Dominguez Hills 30-27, 30-21, 30-18 in the final conference match for both teams. The Tritons improve to 19-8, 11-7 CCAA while the Toros drop to 6-20, 2-16 CCAA. The Tritons outhit CSUDH .330-.134 as
Nicole Courtney led the way with 12 kills and nine digs.
Laura Watkins set the school record for digs in a single season as the San Diego native currently has 408. UCSD will now wait to see if they are one of the eight teams selected for the NCAA Pacific Regional. The announcement will come on Monday.
Game one started slow for UCSD as the Toros jumped to a 12-7 lead on senior night. CSUDH held the lead late at 19-15 after a UCSD error. Down 22-19, UCSD regrouped during a timeout. The Tritons rallied to tie the game at 23-23 on a Rebecca Bailey kill. Kimberly Carpenter then served an ace, followed by another Bailey kill and a second Carpenter ace. Quickly, the Tritons had regained the lead at 26-23. The advantage would hold as Courtney put game one away with a kill, 30-27.
The Tritons trailed early in game two at 12-7 after a Courtney Spainhour kill. Spainhour would lead the Toros with 13 kills on the night. UCSD would not capture the lead until an Amber Ries kill put UCSD ahead 17-16. The Tritons went on a 6-1 run, capped by another Ries kill to lead 23-17. CSUDH cut it to 23-20 before UCSD ran off four more points for a comfortable 27-20 lead. UCSD won game two on a Brianna Koche and Carpenter block assist, 30-21. Koche would finish the night with a team-high five blocks and added eight kills. Carpenter would finish the match with seven kills and zero attack errors and a .467 attack percentage.
UCSD took an early lead in game three at 10-5, en route to a third game hitting percentage of .417 (18-3-26). The lead would quickly evaporate as CSUDH ran off four straight to trail 10-9. UCSD put together a small 8-3 run to lead 18-12, capped by a Ries kill. Ries finished the night with nine kills and one error (.533). CSUDH never made a run after that as the Tritons won game three 30-18.
Bailey finished the night with eight kills (8-0-10) and hit .800. She also added four aces. Watkins had 12 digs, giving her 408 on the season. The old UCSD record was held by Leslie Punelli with 397 set in 2000. Natalie Facchini added eight digs for UCSD.
The Tritons entered the week in a three-way tie for sixth place in the NCAA Pacific Regional Rankings.
