-- The 18
th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team was swept for just the second time this season, falling to Cal Poly Pomona 30-27, 30-21, 30-26 on Friday night. The loss drops the Tritons to 18-8, 10-7 CCAA while the Broncos improve to 23-2, 15-2 CCAA.
Kimberly Carpenter had nine kills and one block for the Tritons, while
Rebecca Bailey had seven kills and two blocks.
Laura Watkins dug eight balls to come within one of the UCSD single-season record. The Tritons will close out conference play at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
The Tritons, who entered the week tied for sixth in the Pacific Region rankings and fighting for a postseason berth, jumped on the Broncos in the first game and led by as many as five points, the last time at 15-11. The Tritons led as late as 27-25 before the Broncos rattled off the last five points of the game, three of the points coming on blocks at the net. Anderson had block assists on all three blocks, while Francis was involved in two. The Broncos finished off the game on an attack error by the Tritons.
The Broncos raced to a 20-7 lead in the second game and held off a late comeback bid by the Tritons. Cal Poly Pomona jumped out to a 12-5 advantage in the third game and led by at least three points the rest of the way.
