No. 6 UCSD Defeats No. 12 Princeton 12-7

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 6  UC San Diego men's water polo team defeated No. 12 Princeton 12-7 on Friday night in Canyonview Pool.  Brandon Borso led the way for the Tritons with four goals.  The Tritons improve to 18-2, while the Tigers drop to 10-4.  The difference was in the second period when UCSD outscored Princeton 4-0.  In the second period, Chris Eichholz broke open a tie game with two scores and Borso would add two more for the 6-2 halftime lead.  Jonathan Hopkins added three scores for UCSD.  John Stover led Princeton with three goals.

 

In the first period, Princeton got on the board first on a John Stover goal.  Borso would strike at 2:16 and the Tritons would go ahead on Chris Finegold's goal with 1:41 left.  Stover added his second goal of the period to tie the game at 2-2 after one.

 

The Tritons took command in the second period as Eichholz netted back-to-back goals at 5:43 and 3:16 for the 4-2 lead.  Borso then netted his second and third goals of the evening, the last just before halftime with :03 left.

 

Adnan Jerkovic began the third period with a score to put UCSD in front 7-2.  After the Tigers' Stover netted his third goal of the game, Ty Lackey and Jonathan Hopkins responded to put the Tritons ahead 9-3.  Princeton would cut the deficit to 9-5, but Hopkins would net his second goal of the quarter to give UCSD a comfortable 10-5 lead, heading to the final quarter.

 

In the fourth quarter, the teams would exchange goals.  The Tritons' scores came from Hopkins and Borso.

 

UCSD takes on the alumni team in Canyonview Pool on Saturday at 11:00 am.  UCSD heads to the NorCal Tournament on Oct. 15-16 in Berkeley, Calif.
