IRVINE, Calif. - The 6th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team suffered a 13-4 loss to 7th-ranked UC Irvine on Friday night. The Tritons offense was shut down in the second-half, as the Anteaters outscored UCSD 7-1. The loss drops UCSD to 20-7 and UC Irvine improves to 12-9. Jonathan Hopkins netted two goals for the Tritons while Chris Finegold and Adnan Jerkovic also scored. Colin McElroy had four saves in goal.
Trailing 1-0 in the first quarter, Hopkins netted a goal to tie the game at 1-1. UCI would tack on two more scored before the end of the quarter to lead 3-1 after one.
In the second quarter Hopkins netted his second goal to bring the Tritons within 4-2 and Chris Finegold scored later with 3:49 remaining to bring the Tritons within 5-3. UCI scored with :11 left in the half to go up 6-3 at halftime.
The second-half was all UCI as they outscored UCSD 3-0 in the third and 4-1 in the fourth.
UCSD is back in action tomorrow afternoon at WWPA rival Loyola Marymount. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
