10th-ranked Tritons Fall to Unbeaten Broncos

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 10th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team came up short against unbeaten Cal Poly Pomona 30-22, 26-30, 26-30, 28-30 on Saturday night.  The loss drops the Tritons to 13-3, 5-2 CCAA while the Broncos remain in first-place at 16-0, 8-0 CCAA.  Nicole Courtney notched a double-double with 15 kills and 17 digs.  Brianna Koche and Kimberly Carpenter tallied 11 kills apiece.  Cal Poly Pomona had two players with 20 kills each.

 

With the score tied 19-19 in game one, UCSD scored the next three points on a Koche kill and two Courtney aces for a 22-19 advantage.  Leading 22-21, UCSD scored six consecutive points, the last on a Rebecca Bailey kill to put the Tritons up 28-21.  Kristin Halvorsen served an ace to end game one 30-22 UCSD.

 

The Broncos jumped out early in game two with a 7-2 lead.  The Tritons would tie it on two occassions at 12-12 and 22-22.  CPP scored the next three points for the 25-22 lead and would not look back, taking the game 30-26.

 

Game three was the same as game two, with CPP jumping out to the early lead at 13-6.  UCSD would get as close as 15-13, but CPP had the answers to extend the lead again.  CPP took the game 30-26.

 

Game four was even throughout as the largest lead was a 6-3 margin in favor of UCSD.  With the score tight throughout, CPP finially tied the game at 26-26.  The Tritons took a 28-27 lead on a Carpenter kill, but could not force game point as the Broncos rallied off the final three points to win 30-28.

 

UCSD is back in action on Thursday October 6 against Cal State L.A. in Los Angeles, Calif.  First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
