UC San Diego senior righthander Alex Cremidan was selected Wednesday on the second and final day of the Major League Baseball Draft, in the 35th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Cremidan, a local product out of El Cajon and Valhalla High School, was the 1,056th overall selection in the Draft. After posting a 5-2 record and 2.38 ERA to earn the team's Most Valuable Pitcher honors as a freshman, Cremidan went 2-4 with a 6.29 ERA in 2001. In his junior campaign, he put together his best season as a Triton, finishing 7-2 with a 3.07 ERA and being selected to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association Second Team. Cremidan shared Team Most Valuable Pitcher honors with teammmate James Sanders (Chula Vista/Hilltop HS). Throughout a bulk of his senior year in 2003, he battled injury, closing his UCSD career with a 2-2 record and 6.21 ERA.
Cremidan spent the 2002 summer training with the Greece national team, both in Europe and in Baltimore, Maryland. He remains a candidate for the 2004 Greek Olympic Team. The Economics major will graduate later this month.
