LA JOLLA, Calif. - Looking to keep its momentum going following a second-place finish at its own tournament two weeks ago, UC San Diego will participate in the 8th Redhawk Invitational, hosted by Seattle University at Chambers Bay Golf Course in Washington.
UC San Diego is one of 24 schools competing at Chambers Bay, located in University Place, Wash., southwest of Tacoma on the Puget Sound.
Chambers Bay hosted the 2015 U.S. Open. Jordan Spieth of the United States birdied two of his final three holes to top Dustin Johnson of the United States and South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen by a single stroke to become the champion of the 115th Open.
Joining UC San Diego out of the Big West Conference is CSUN. Three teams in the field are ranked in the nation's top-100 including Washington (5), Oregon State (50), and Boise State (62). Washington is sending four individuals and will not be in contention for the team title. Five squads hail from the state of Texas including Abilene Christian, Lamar, UT Arlington, UT Rio Grande Valley, and UTEP.
The 2021 rendition of the Redhawk Invitational was won by San Francisco, which is not competing this year. The individual medalist was Soren Lind of San Francisco.
For the Tritons, redshirt freshman
Davis McDowell will be playing in the No. 1 spot. McDowell placed second of 89 players at the UC San Diego Invitational, just a single stroke behind the individual winner.
Also on course for the Tritons will be true freshman
Francis Catalano, junior
Elliot Bunyaviroch, senior
Ryan Vaughan, and senior
Sergi Mata.
UC San Diego comes into Chambers Bay after a second-place showing at the UC San Diego Invitational, its best-ever finish as an NCAA Division I program in a full-field tournament. The Tritons were just one stroke behind Sacramento State, which will also be competing at the Redhawk Invitational.
All action from Chambers Bay can be followed with
