Xavier Barajas Smith was named an assistant coach with the UC San Diego women's tennis team in August of 2013. He enters his fifth year with the program in 2017-18.
Barajas Smith began his coaching career in 2006 at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club in Sacramento where he assisted with tennis clinics. He proceeded on to In-Shape tennis club (2007-09), where he provided tennis clinics for junior players and held private lessons. Barajas Smith continued to assist in coaching at Fairbanks Country Club (2010-13), where he instructed several of the top women in the world.
From 2002-06, Barajas Smith competed on the varsity team at El Diamante High School, where he was a four-time MVP and a four-time league champion. He was ranked No. 1 in USTA Northern California (2004-06).
Continuing his tennis career, Barajas Smith competed for Sacramento State as an NCAA Division I player his freshman year (2006-07) and and then transfered to Fresno Pacific University (2009-13).
While at Fresno Pacific, Barajas Smith was an NAIA First Team All-American (2010-12), ranked No. 2 in the ITA national rankings in 2010 and 2012 and No. 1 in 2011. In 2012, Barajas Smith obtained ATP points and was named the GSAC Player of the Year.
The Visalia native earned a bachelor's degree in Finance from Fresno Pacific in 2013.
