Greg LaPorte returned to the University of California San Diego on Aug. 20, 2018, as an assistant coach with the women's soccer program. He had previously spent four seasons as an assistant coach for both the UC San Diego men and women from 2007-10, in charge of the goalkeepers.
In 2021, UC San Diego's first competing in NCAA Division I and the Big West, LaPorte helped the Tritons post a five-win season, including three victories and a tie during the program's first Big West season.
In 2019, LaPorte helped the Tritons close their Division II era with a successful season. Finishing the season with a 16-2-1 record, UC San Diego collected its fifth-straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament title. The Tritons led the nation in both shutout percentage (.737) and save percentage (0.892). Under LaPorte and the rest of the coaching staff, three Tritons earned All-America honors.
During the 2018 season, LaPorte aided the Tritons to a record of 19-3-2, as well as CCAA regular season and tournament crowns, and the NCAA West Region title.
A San Diego native and Poway High School graduate, LaPorte has been the head coach of Los Angeles Galaxy San Diego of the WPSL since 2016.
LaPorte left UC San Diego and moved across town to the University of San Diego, where he assisted with the Torero women for five seasons from 2011-15, finishing as the associate head coach.
In leading the Vanderbilt Commodores as the starting freshman goalkeeper, LaPorte held the lowest goals against average in the Sunbelt Conference. His leadership and skills led him to be named captain of his team following his freshman season. LaPorte left Vanderbilt after his second year to pursue a professional career in Europe and South America.
LaPorte's professional career went from 1999-2002 and began in England, where he trained with Manchester City and Doncaster Rovers. He then played in Sao Paulo, Brazil, for Amparo Atletico. LaPorte then played in the Oberliga and Regionaliga in Germany. LaPorte concluded his professional career in Italy.
LaPorte's coaching career led him back to his high school alma mater, where he coached the Poway Titans. LaPorte joined the varsity staff for the Titans as an assistant coach for four years and in 2006, he coached the freshman girls to an undefeated season. During the 2007 season, LaPorte was the varsity assistant and coached La Costa Canyon's boy's freshman to an undefeated season. LaPorte also was a goalkeeper and women's head coach for San Diego Surf. LaPorte assisted San Diego Surf's Academy Program under Colin Chesters.
LaPorte is a 2011 graduate of San Diego's Ashford University.
