• Jessica Millsap Steps Down, Cherishes Memories After 11 Irreplaceable Years (8/4/20)
Jessica Millsap was promoted to Associate Head Coach in August of 2013 after serving as an assistant coach with the UCSD softball program since the fall of 2009. Since the 2010 season, Millsap has also served as the pitching coach and pitch caller.
Millsap is also the recruiting coordinator for the Tritons. During her tenure, players have been named All-CCAA 50 times, including three Freshman of the Year honorees, one Player of the Year, and two Pitcher of the Year accolades.
In 2020, what would eventually be an abbreviated season, Millsap guided the Tritons to an overall record of 21-8 (.724) and 12-8 (.600) across CCAA play. UC San Diego wrapped up the year listed in the top-three in CCAA batting average (.311), ERA (1.75) and fielding percentage (.965). The blue and gold ranked first in hits (233), doubles (47), and total bases (310). Nine scholar-athletes were listed in the top-10 of the CCAA individual leader boards including Robyn Wampler who continues to rewrite the UC San Diego record books every season. Six others met career milestones and surpassed former Tritons in various all-time categories. Alanna Phillips reached her 100th career strikeout, while Mikaila Reyes and Danica Kazakoff tallied their 100th career hits.
After over a decade with the Tritons, Millsap will witness UC San Diego transition from Division II to Division I beginning July of 2020.
During the 2018-19 season, Millsap helped the Tritons to their first West Region title and NCAA Championship appearance since 2012. UC San Diego claimed the title in dramatic fashion, with a walk-off win over top-seeded Concordia Irvine during the NCAA West Super Regional in Irvine.
That same season, Millsap assisted the Tritons to their first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular-season crown since 2011. Millsap and the rest of the coaching staff staff were ultimately named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) West Region Coaching Staff of the Year for their efforts throughout 2018-19. This was her third NFCA coaching accolade of her career, with the others coming in 2011 and 2012.
The Tritons won a school-record 45 games in 2011 and 2012 and made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II national title game, winning their first championship in 2011 and finishing as the runner-up in 2012.
Millsap was part of the 2011 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year as well as the 2012 NFCA West Region Coaching Staff of the Year.
Primarily working with Triton pitchers and outfielders, Millsap guided a 2011 Triton pitching staff that had the eighth-lowest ERA (1.44) in the nation and the lowest ERA in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Ace Camille Gaito finished with the second-most wins in the nation and the fourth-lowest ERA. Moreover, UCSD regular starting outfielders Kris Lesovsky, Katrin Gabriel and Taylor Sepulveda all boasted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
Between January 2007 and May 2009, Millsap served as the top assistant for Biola University, helping the squad to an overall record of 77-63. The 2007 campaign turned out to be especially spectacular as the Eagles advanced to the second round of the NAIA Region II Tournament.
Before her experience at Biola, Millsap spent time as an assistant coach for the Jets Gold 18U squad in Agoura Hills and head coach at nearby Arcadia High School.
Millsap graduated from Chatham University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. As a senior, she captained the Cougars' softball team while earning Most Valuable Player honors. She received her master's degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University in Irvine in 2014.
Millsap was born and raised in San Diego and graduated from West Hills High School, guiding the Wolf Pack to a CIF Championship title in 1999 and CIF Championship runners-up in 2000.
Millsap is married to Matt Morrison, head football coach and P.E. teacher at Francis Parker School. They reside in Clairemont with their two dogs.
