Geoff Bond is in his second season as the head coach of the University of California San Diego men's rowing program in 2020-21. Bond was named the program's head coach in October of 2019.
Under Bond, the team was poised for success in 2019-20. At the San Diego Fall Classic, UC San Diego placed first in the Men's Open 8+ for the first time since 2013. Unfortunately, the spring season was ultimately canceled due to COVID-19.
Bond previously served as the head coach at the University of Pennsylvania from 2015-19. He oversaw training, recruiting, and fundraising efforts for the Quakers. Bond guided his team throughout cup season and championship season, as they competed at the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) Sprints and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship each year.
Bond also spent time coaching at Cal. After serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the varsity crew from 1996-00, Bond was the team’s associate head coach from 2000-2009. During his time with the Golden Bears, the team collected numerous accolades. Among the highlights were gold-medal finishes at the 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2008 IRA National Championships.
Bond has also coached outside of the collegiate sphere. He was at the helm of the Deerfield Academy boys rowing team in Massachusetts, leading all aspects of training. The team won the New England Championships and a bronze medal at Youth Nationals in 2014.
Rowing has taken Bond across the globe, as he served as a strength and conditioning consultant for Jiangsu Rowing Club. He developed and oversaw a strength and conditioning program for the Chinese national team rowers.
Bond's start to coaching began at Berkeley High School in 1993. He spent three years recruiting and training the squad's oarsmen and coxswains. Under Bond's guidance, the team won medals at the SW Regional Championships.
Bond is a graduate of Brown University. He rowed on IRA National Championship medal-winning teams and also served as the boathouse caretaker.
