During his 34 years in the SUHSD, Gonzalez spent 16 years coaching high school baseball. His coaching career began as an assistant at the University of San Diego in 1973-74 and as head coach at Southwest High from 1975-77 and 1980-81.

In 1995 Gonzalez was named the head coach at Eastlake High School, where his teams compiled a record of 227-107 (.680) over 12 seasons. He led two teams to the CIF Championships, winning titles in 1999 and 2002. He produced two Hall of Champions Media Players of the Year, three CIF Coaches Division Players of the Year, and numerous All-South Bay League Players of the Year and All-League selections.

Gonzalez' Titans hit 75 home runs in 1999, which set a state record and his 1999 and 2002 teams were ranked in the top 20 in the national polls. More than 30 of his players went on to play collegiately, with 12 playing professionally. Two -- Edgar and Adrian Gonzalez -- have made it to the big leagues.

The California Coaches Association named Gonzalez the San Diego Coach of the Year in 2003. Gonzalez also umpired high school and college baseball for 21 years and was co-founder of the Southern California Collegiate Umpires Association.
