In addition to coaching duties, Hom took on Baseball Operations responsibilities in 2011 as well.

Hom played at UCSD from 2005-08, earning Rookie of the Year honors and helping the Tritons win the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship (CCAA) in his first season on campus. He was a member of the 2007 squad that advanced to the NCAA West Regional for the first time at the Division II level and was named the team's Most Inspirational Player in 2008 after the Tritons broke the record for wins in a season with 43.

Hom played his prep ball in Northern California at De La Salle High School in Concord.

Hom began his coaching career in 2009, working with the Triton infielders and assisting with the hitters. The Tritons hit .342 as a team in 2009, winning the CCAA regular season title and advancing to the Division II College World Series for the first time. In 2010, UCSD made its second straight trip to the NCAA Finals and in 2011 the Tritons won their third consecutive CCAA regular season and tourney titles. The Tritons have played stellar defense with the assistance of Hom, leading the nation in fielding percentage in 2009 and 2010.
