BOISE, Idaho — UC San Diego fell to Boise State, 1-0, Thursday evening. The Tritons withstood an early first-half stretch of pressure from the Broncos without conceding, but Boise State scored the lone goal in the second half. UC San Diego finished with 10 shots, including two on goal, while Boise State recorded 19 shots and nine on frame.
Charlotte Wilfert made seven saves for the Tritons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncos applied pressure early, recording seven shots and a corner kick during a six minute stretch. Wilfert came up with four saves during the stretch to keep the match scoreless. UC San Diego recorded the first shot of the match in the second minute when
Kennadi Borg tested the Broncos' defense.
The Tritons settled in as the half progressed, earning corner kicks before
Alexis Nguyen sent a shot high. UC San Diego continued to create opportunities through
Anya Lin,
Chloe Yates and
Lana Gilligan, with Yates forcing a save in the 31st minute. Wilfert added saves in the 24th and 37th minutes, and the teams entered halftime scoreless.
Boise State continued to create chances early in the second half, with Wilfert making a save in the 48th minute. The Tritons generated opportunities of their own through Nguyen,
Olivia Shih and
Kat Harris as they looked to break through.
The Broncos found the breakthrough in the 73rd minute to take a 1-0 lead.
UC San Diego pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages.
Natalie Oca put a shot on frame in the 77th minute, but the Broncos' goalkeeper made the save. UC San Diego also navigated late Boise State pressure, including a team save on an attempt, but the Broncos held on for the 1-0 victory.
