LA JOLLA, Calif. — UC San Diego defeated LMU, 2-1, on Monday at Triton Soccer Stadium to improve to 4-2-2 overall. The Tritons finished with a 21-8 advantage in shots and put 11 attempts on goal, including 14 shots in the second half.
Kiki Vostermans scored the game-winning goal in the 89
th minute, with
Anya Lin and
Olivia Shih assisting on the late finish.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons and Lions played to a scoreless first half, with UC San Diego generating opportunities while
Charlotte Wilfert kept LMU off the scoreboard. Wilfert made saves in the second and sixth minutes before the Tritons created chances through
Alexis Nguyen and
Ava Tibor.
UC San Diego continued to defend against LMU's pressure, with Wilfert adding another save in the 22nd minute. The Tritons generated later opportunities through
Lana Gilligan and Vostermans, but both attempts were saved. UC San Diego also earned corner kicks in the 29th and 40th minutes as the match remained scoreless at halftime.
The Tritons came out with sustained pressure in the second half, generating six shots and four corner kicks over a seven-minute stretch. UC San Diego broke through in the 59th minute when
Olivia Shih scored off an assist from
Jenna Grider to give the Tritons a 1-0 lead.
LMU answered just barely over a minute later to level the match at 1-1, but the Tritons continued to create opportunities. Nguyen, Tibor,
Kennadi Borg and
Leilah Raad each had shots saved, while Lin hit the top woodwork as UC San Diego continued to press for the go-ahead goal.
The Tritons continued to generate chances late, putting together a stretch of four shots over 13 minutes before adding three shots and a corner kick in the closing minutes. Wilfert made a save in the 86th minute to keep the match tied.
UC San Diego found the breakthrough in the 89th minute when Vostermans scored at 88:49 off assists from Lin and Shih to put the Tritons ahead, 2-1. The Tritons held on through the final minutes to secure the victory.
