LA JOLLA, Calif. — UC San Diego women's soccer's lone exhibition match ahead of the 2026 season saw the Tritons fall to neighboring San Diego 1-0 on Wednesday at Triton Soccer Stadium.
 
The teams played three 30-minute periods. The first two periods ended scoreless, with San Diego finding the match's only goal in the 82nd minute.
 
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Charlotte Wilfert played the first 60 minutes, making one save to keep San Diego off the scoresheet. Sophomore Lauren Zamora then took over in net to start the final period, playing 17 minutes. She was replaced by true freshman Claire Tonkin for the final 13 minutes. Zamora and Tonkin both made one save as well.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego dominated the first 30 minutes, registering an 8-1 advantage in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Tritons did not record a shot on target, but Ava Tibor hit the crossbar in the 17th minute. Two second-chance opportunities followed on the rebound, with efforts from Kennadi Borg and Alexis Nguyen blocked.
 
The match opened up in the second 30-minute period, with both teams registering their first shots on goal 10 minutes in. Olivia Shih had UC San Diego's on a long-range effort. San Diego's best chance in that period came a few minutes later when a Torero player beat Wilfert to a loose ball, but the ensuing shot missed the open net wide to the left. The Tritons' best chance then came with just under five minutes remaining when Olivia Schiel forced a turnover on the USD backline, but her square ball to an open striker was cut out by the Torero goalkeeper.
 
San Diego had five shots in the final 30 minutes while not allowing one from UC San Diego. Both teams had early opportunities in the period off turnovers. USD had a long-range shot go wide, followed a few minutes later by the Torero goalie beating UC San Diego's Ava Medrano to an errant back pass. San Diego then got the game-winner in the 82nd minute. A through ball down the left side beat the Triton defense, with a shot from just inside the penalty box finding the far netting for the 1-0 result.

"I was pleased with the way we came out on the attack tonight," said UC San Diego head coach Kristin Jones '04. "The purpose of this match is to assess where we are and where we need to improve — and we were able to see that tonight."
 
TRITON TIDBITS

• Ten of the Tritons' 11 starters were on last year's team, with five appearing in at least 18 of the team's 19 matches in 2025.
• Two starters played in their first matches as Tritons. Olivia Shih redshirted her freshman season in 2025, while Cadee Borg is a graduate transfer from Pepperdine.
• All three Borg sisters were a part of the team on Wednesday night. Cadee was joined in the starting lineup by younger sister Kennadi, while older sister Camryn is an assistant coach.
• The two teams met for the first time since an exhibition match ahead of the 2023 season. That match also ended with a 1-0 result in favor of San Diego.
• UC San Diego is in its final season in The Big West. The Tritons will join the Toreros in the West Coast Conference ahead of the 2027 season.
