Tritons Fall to Roadrunners to Even Series

UC San Diego dropped a 10-8 decision to Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — UC San Diego baseball fell to Cal State Bakersfield 10-8 on Saturday night at Hardt Field. The Tritons' (21-25, 15-11 Big West) held a four-run lead heading into the eighth inning before the Roadrunners (22-29, 10-16 Big West) scored six unanswered runs, including a three-run home run in the ninth for the walk off.
 
Addison Klepsch led the Tritons offensively, going 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, four RBI, two runs scored. Gabe Camacho also had a double, a walk and an RBI, while Ryson Ujimori knocked a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Anthony Potestio had a hit, a walk and two runs scored and Nick Costello drew four walks and scored twice.
 
Starter Nic Gregson pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Jake Villar pitched 3.0 innings in relief, allowing three runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeout. Connor Etnire (5-1) pitched two thirds of an inning, recording a strikeout, before giving up three hits in the ninth including the game winner.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego threatened early, getting two runners on in the first and loading the bases with no outs in the third, but the Tritons came up empty both times. The visitors broke through in the fourth with an RBI triple by Ujimori to score Costello and give UC San Diego the 1-0 advantage.
 
Gregson pitched four scoreless innings to start the contest, tallying six strikeouts in the process. Bakersfield broke through in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on three hits and one error to take the lead 4-1.
 
The Tritons responded right away with a four-run inning of their own in the top of the sixth. UC San Diego loaded the bases with one out via a walk and two hit batters. Klepsch doubled to right center, scoring Costello and Ujimori. Leopard singled to center field to score Potestio and Klepsch to put the Tritons back in front, 5-4.
 
UC San Diego added on in the seventh, scoring two runs on a triple to left center by Klepsch. Camacho followed with a double through the left side to score Klepsch and make it 8-4.
 
The Roadrunners rallied for three runs on three hits and one error in the bottom of the eighth, pulling within one, 8-7. Bakersfield hit back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the ninth before a home run to right field secured the walk off victory for the home team.
