Tritons Drop Series Finale to UC Davis

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Visiting UC Davis won 4-1 over UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon in the final game of the Big West series between the two teams at Triton Softball Field. The Tritons (12-15, 2-4 Big West) won both games on Friday to take the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Maalia Cherry provided the Tritons' only run of the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Tritons got another hit in the first on an infield knock by Lily Hermsillo, but the catcher was left stranded.

UC San Diego only had two more hits in the contest, both infield singles. Tori Hinostro got one in the second and Jackie Tremper got one in the fourth. UC Davis' Caroline Grimes got the win after pitching a completing game, striking out three Tritons in the process.

The Aggies tied the game in the top of the third with a solo homer of their own. They then appeared to take the lead in the fifth as one run crossed home after a fly out to right, with a second potential run tagged out at the plate. The Tritons successfully appealed that the first runner left early, resulting in a triple play and the game still tied at 1-1.

UC Davis would take the lead for good with a three-run sixth inning. The Aggies took advantage of two hits, a walk, a passed ball and an error to string together their three runs. That 4-1 scoreline would end up being the game's final.

TRITON TIDBITS
  • Cherry's home run was her seventh of the season.
  • Triton head coach Nikki Palmer (Class of 2007) and Aggie head coach Erin Thorpe (Class of 2000) are both UC San Diego alums.
