Full Team Effort Propels Tritons Past Cal Poly

UC San Diego defeated the Mustangs, 85-61, on Saturday afternoon

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—In their final road game of the regular season, UC San Diego women's basketball defeated Cal Poly, 85-61, on Saturday afternoon in Mott Athletics Center. The Tritons (20-8, 15-3 Big West) secured their second consecutive 20-win season with the victory over the Mustangs (3-25, 1-17 Big West).
 
All ten Tritons scored in the contest, led by Makayla Rose with 16 points and three steals. Erin Condron recorded her tenth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds, adding three steals and two assists. Rosa Smith and Lev Feiman added 12 points apiece and Dymonique Maxie finished with a team-high six assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons scored early and often in the opening quarter, building an 11-4 advantage behind six points for Condron and a three by Ma. A five-point swing by the Mustangs with under four minutes on the clock cut the advantage to two, 11-9. UC San Diego responded with a seven-point run and took an 18-11 lead into the first quarter break.
 
UC San Diego continued to stack possessions in the second quarter, outscoring Cal Poly, 27-15 in period. A pair of threes from Ma added to a 30-17 advantage for the visitors midway through the period. The Tritons continued to push the pace down the stretch, outscoring Cal Poly, 11-5, in the closing minutes to lead, 45-26, at halftime.
 
After back-to-back layups by the Mustangs to open the third period, Smith scored five consecutive points as part of a 7-0 swing for the visitors to lead, 52-30. A three by Smith and a layup by Maxie gave the Tritons their largest lead of the quarter, 61-37, with under two minutes to play. UC San Diego took a 64-43 advantage into the final break.
 
Cal Poly began the final period with a 4-0 run, but the Tritons quickly responded to score nine unanswered, highlighted by a Lev Feiman three to lead, 73-47. Another three by Feiman with under four minutes remaining gave UC San Diego its largest lead of the contest, 78-50. The Tritons held on down the stretch to secure the, 85-61, victory.
