HOW IT HAPPENED
The game opened with the Toreros taking an early lead in the first inning, driving in a run on an RBI single to put them ahead 1-0.
Â
In the third inning, USD widened its lead with an RBI double and a pair of home runs to left field to lead, 5-0. The Tritons responded as Camacho hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to get UC San Diego on the board. Crossland doubled, then scored on Allen's RBI single to make it 5-2. An error allowed another run, tightening the game to 5-3 in favor of the visitors.
Â
An inning later, the Tritons equalized the score when Camacho doubled down the right field line, bringing in two runs to make it 5-5.
Â
USD edged ahead in the seventh, scoring a runner from third on a one-out groundout to second base. The Toreros added an insurance run in the top of the eighth, after a single up the middle brought in a runner from second to make it 7-5.
Â
The Tritons responded in the bottom of the eighth loading the bases with two outs via an error, a single and a hit batter. UC San Diego scored an unearned run, thanks to
Bryan Bradshaw's bases-loaded walk to make it 7-6, but the Tritons left the bases loaded after a strikeout ended the rally.
Â
The Tritons got another chance in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases once again with one out. Leopard was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run, but a strikeout and a diving catch by USD's left fielder over the fence in foul territory ended the inning with the score knotted, 7-7.
Â
In the tenth, true freshman
Shane Cannon drew a leadoff walk in his first collegiate at-bat to get another rally started for the Tritons. A pair of walks for Camacho and Potestio loaded the bases to set up the walk off scenario. On an 0-2 count to Allen, a wild pitch went to the backstop, allowing Cannon to score the game-winner for UC San Diego, 8-7.
