Tritons Battle to Triple Overtime at Davis

UC San Diego fell to the Aggies, 88-80, on Thursday evening

DAVIS, Calif.—UC San Diego women's basketball dropped an 88-80 decision to UC Davis in triple overtime on Thursday evening in University Credit Union Arena. In a game that saw 15 ties and 15 lead changes, the Tritons (17-7, 12-2 Big West) scored 44 points in the paint against the Aggies (18-7, 11-3 Big West), but gave up 16 three-pointers in the contest. UC San Diego held the lead for 34:14 minutes, compared to just 9:22 for UCD.
 
Erin Condron recorded her eighth double-double of the season to lead the Tritons with 22 points and 11 rebounds, adding one block. Sabrina Ma and Makayla Rose both finished with 16 points, with Rose collected a team-best six steals and Ma tallying three steals and one block. Dymonique Maxie also finished in double-figures with 11 points and led the team with five assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons got off to a strong start, building a 9-2 advantage to open the contest. The Tritons held Davis to 0-for-8 from the field to start the game before a three-pointer ended the drought at 4:32. With UC San Diego leading 11-5, the Aggies put together a nine-point scoring run to take the lead with under a minute to play in the quarter. A Condron layup in the final seconds made it 14-13 in favor of the home team at the first break.
 
UC San Diego rallied to open the second frame, with back-to-back steal-and-score buckets from Rose. A series of three 3-pointers put the Aggies back in front, 23-19, but the Tritons quickly answered with a string of six-points to pull back in front, 25-23. UC San Diego's defense blanked the Aggies from the field in the final 3:23 and tallied three straight layups to lead 31-25 at halftime. The Tritons struggled from three-point range in the first half, sinking just 1-for-9 but UC San Diego had a 20-2 advantage in the paint.
 
The Tritons came out of the halftime intermission on fire, putting together a 9-2 scoring run to build a double-figure advantage, 40-27, their largest of the contest. The teams traded blows to a 47-38 Triton advantage down to two minutes on the clock. The Aggies gained momentum down the stretch, putting together a 4-0 swing before a three by Ma ended the run. Davis knocked in a three at the buzzer to make it 50-45 at the third quarter break. 
 
The Tritons struggled offensively in the fourth period, scoring just seven points in the quarter. Davis scored seven straight points to open the period, retaking the lead, 52-50, midway through the frame. Smith scored the only points in the first seven minutes for the Tritons—a three to keep it a one-possession game. Maxie ended the drought with a jumper to tie it, 55-55, with 2:50 remaining in regulation. Davis answered with a layup of its own on the next possession, but the Triton defense held strong down the stretch to keep the Aggies scoreless in the final 2:27 of regulation. Condron put a layup through in the final 40 seconds to send the game to overtime.
 
The first extra frame saw the Tritons open with a six-point scoring run, highlighted by back-to-back layups from Condron. The Aggies responded with an eight-point run to pull in front, 65-63, with 4.9 seconds remaining. Maxie sent a lob pass inside to Condron who dropped in a left-handed floater with 1.5 remaining to tie the game and force a second overtime period.
 
The teams traded baskets to begin the second extra frame, with the Tritons scoring first and holding the edge. A pivotal three by Ma midway through the period gave UC San Diego a 72-70 advantage, but Davis responded with a layup and three for a five-point swing to pull in front 75-72 with one minute remaining. Ma knocked down a pair of free throws and Maxie converted 1-of-2 at the line with 14.6 seconds to, tying the game once again and forcing a third five-minute frame.
 
Ma struck first with a three in the opening minutes of the third overtime period, but the Aggies quickly responded with a three of their own and a layup to take the lead 80-78 with just under two minutes to play. Michaela Fairwell made a critical steal and tied the game. 80-all, with a pair of free throws after getting fouled on the fast break. UC Davis took the lead for good with another three with 51 seconds to play and the Tritons missed their final three chances, ultimately falling 88-80.
