NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — A heavy rain complemented a tough men's soccer battle on Wednesday at CSUN's Matador Soccer Field, with the hosts beating UC San Diego 3-2.
Tyler Cash and
Masayuki Fujita scored for the Tritons (7-6-2, 1-1-2 Pac-12).
Â
The contest was the Tritons' final nonconference match of the season. They have two Pac-12 games remaining.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams capitalized on each other's mistakes to score first-half goals. CSUN opened the scoring in the 30th minute after intercepting an off-target pass and converting the ensuing counterattack.
Â
The Tritons then equalized in the 41st minute.
Keenai Braun sent a long ball into a dangerous area, with the Matador clearance being miss-hit straight to
Cael McElderry. He played a quick pass over to Cash, who brought the game level.
Â
Â
The first minute of the second half saw a golden opportunity for the Tritons to go in front.
Sean McTague's cross across the face of goal found an open Fujita on the back post, but his shot just missed wide.
Â
McTague and Fujita then teamed up again in the 57th minute, this time finding the back of the net.
Nate Morgan's long throw-in was headed out but collected by McTague, with his dribbling run into the box making multiple defenders miss. He then played a pass over to Fujita, who sent a curling shot into the far post to put the Tritons up 2-1.
Â
Â
CSUN was able to find an equalizer just three minutes later. A long ball in behind a high Triton backline found an attacker, who put a touch around Triton goalkeeper
Nic Thiele to set up a finish into an open net.
Â
The Matadors then went on to get the game winner in the 67th minute. That goal came off a penalty kick. The Tritons challenged to overturn the penalty, but the call was upheld thanks in part to an obstructed camera.
