COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – UC San Diego junior
Andrea Guillen scored her first career goal in the 70th minute to propel the Tritons to a 3-2 come-from-behind win Thursday night over Colorado College at Stewart Field. It was a wild second half that saw five combined goals in the rain, after a scoreless first half under dry conditions.
Unbeaten in five straight, the Tritons are now 2-1-3 overall. The Tigers fell to 2-2-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego's first scoring chance of the match came in the 19th minute, when grad student
Natalie Abel weaved through traffic and fired a shot with pace from 23 yards out – but Tigers' keeper Regan Wallace made the stop waist high. The Tritons earned their first corner kick of the match in the 23rd minute, but a shot attempt from sophomore
Kat Harris sailed wide.
Colorado College had a shot in the 28th minute that was on frame, but UC San Diego keeper
Charlotte Wilfert was there to make an easy save. The Tritons earned their second corner in the 40th minute but could not get a look at the net. UC San Diego held a slim 4-2 lead in shots over the first 45.
As the second half got underway, what had been a light drizzle for the last couple minutes of the first half picked up in intensity. In the 56th minute, the Tritons broke through. Redshirt freshman
Ava Tibor found Abel, whose shot trickled past a lunging Wallace. Abel's first score of the season gave UC San Diego a one-nil lead.
Less than two minutes later, CC's Jessica Anderson netted the equalizer. The Tigers forged ahead in the 62nd minute on a goal by Sophia Mayne.
Undeterred, UC San Diego fired right back, just 1:45 after the Tigers took the lead. Junior
Alexis Nguyen scored her first of the season with a rebound and putback, bringing the match level at 2-2.
In the 70th minute, UC San Diego regained the lead. Guillen ripped a shot off the post. She stayed with it, collected the loose ball, and fired a rocket into the back of the net with her left foot to put the Tritons on top.
In the 89th minute, UC San Diego was handed a yellow card, setting up a Tigers free kick. The Triton defense prevented Colorado College from getting a shot off, and UC San Diego hung on for the road win.
