LA JOLLA, Calif. — Nationally-ranked Utah Valley broke open a match that was scoreless at the half, taking home a 3-0 victory over UC San Diego men's soccer on Monday night at Triton Soccer Stadium.
Â
The No. 16 Wolverines moved to 6-0-0 on the year, with the squad yet to concede a goal this season. The Tritons fell to 0-4-2.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
A back-and-forth first half saw Utah Valley hold 61% of possession, earning six corners and taking 10 shots. But it was the Tritons who registered more shots on goal, forcing the Wolverines into four saves. UC San Diego had a series of chances in the 39th minute off a corner kick that saw the visitors make three-straight saves.
Â
Neither team ultimately found the back of the net in the first, but that changed shortly after the break. Another Wolverine corner kick was fired low across the six-yard box, taking an unlucky bounce off a Triton leg for an own goal.
Â
The visitors extended the lead to 2-0 in the 73rd minute off a penalty kick. They then made it 3-0 just four minutes later, capitalizing on the extra space available as the Tritons pushed further up the pitch.
Â
The Tritons registered four shots in the second half. Two were on target, but none found the back of the net as the matched ended 3-0.
