Tritons Earn Road Draw with No. 17 Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. — An equalizer in the 73rd minute from Evan Wellerstein gave Triton men's soccer a hard-fought 1-1 draw Sunday night on the road at No. 17 Cal.

Goalkeeper Nolan Premack led the Tritons in the back, making eight saves. Keenai Braun recorded the assist on Wellerstein's goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Cal opened the scoring in the final minute of the first half. That shot was one of eight that the Golden Bears registered before the break.

The home side kept the pressure on in the second half, taking seven shots and seven corner kicks. The Triton defense kept Cal off the scoresheet again and allowed the offense to develop a number of opportunities going forward.

Wellerstein's goal came off a recycled free kick. The initial effort was cleared away before the Tritons collected and moved the ball to Nate Morgan. His second-effort to the back post found the head of Braun, who headed a square ball to a wide-open Wellerstein at the top of the six. The redshirt junior then easily slotted home the third goal of his career.
The Tritons survived five Cal corners in the final 15 minutes and a late free kick to see the match finish at 1-1.

TRITON TIDBITS
  • Sunday's match was the second time the Tritons got a result against a ranked opponent since joining Division I. The 2022 team beat then-No. 22 Santa Clara 2-0.
  • Premack's eight saves are tied for the second-most of his career. The grad student has appeared in 57 matches across his time with California Baptist and UC San Diego.
  • This was the second match all-time between the two teams. The previous meeting, held in 2022, also ended 1-1.
QUOTABLE
"I am really proud of the way the guys battled today," head coach Jon Pascale said. "To get a point away at Cal is a good result. They are a good team and threw a lot at us. I believe our team is starting to come together and gain confidence and belief in each other. If we can continue showing up with the attitude and mentality we had today, we will win a lot of games."
