Tritons Drop Second Game to Aggies

UC San Diego fell to UC Davis, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon

LA JOLLA, Calif.— UC San Diego baseball could not hold on against UC Davis in a 10-9 decision on Saturday afternoon in Triton Ballpark. The Tritons (24-23, 13-13 Big West) gave up five runs to the Aggies (24-26, 11-15 Big West) in the ninth inning, dropping their third series of the season 0-2.

Emiliano Gonzalez went 3-for-4 on the day, with a double and two RBI. Anthony Potestio and Gabe Camacho each contributed another two RBI, while Michael Crossland and Thomas Maher both notched one. J.C. Allen continued his home run magic on Saturday, hitting a one-run bomb over the centerfield wall early on.

Nic Gregson started on the bump and pitched into the fifth inning. He recorded six strikeouts, two walks and four runs on nine hits. Jake Villar pitched an inning and change, posting a walk, hit, and run before Devon King stepped in for one strikeout.

UC San Diego cycled through three pitchers in the final inning, beginning with Julian Cazares, who conceded four runs on three hits before Sam Hasegawa stepped onto the mound; Hasegawa gave up a walk and a run. Chapman Weber closed out the inning, giving up one hit and walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aggies took no time getting on the board with an RBI double in the first inning. Allen took a two-seamer into deep centerfield in the next inning to tie it at one apiece. A Cooper Thacker dink to shallow left field loaded the bases in the same inning, setting up a Maher RBI sacrifice flyout to take a 2-1 lead.

A walk to Potestio kept the inning alive, allowing for a Crossland RBI single and Camacho RBI double to go up 5-1.

The teams each notched a run in the third inning, including a Gonzalez centerfield rope that made it to the warning track to score Lomanto from second.

After a quiet fourth and fifth inning, the Aggies got going with a pair of runs, prompting a Triton pitching change that successfully stopped the rally. An inning later, Potestio converted an over-the-shoulder pop fly catch into a double play with a first base putout to keep the score at 6-4.

An RBI single got UC Davis within a run in the penultimate inning. However, a Gonzelez RBI single down to left field retained the host's two-run cushion. A well-placed Thacker bunt loaded the bases before Potestio dropped another into left field to make it 9-5.

UC Davis snatched a run in the ninth with an RBI single. However, the true damage came a batter later, with a three-run home run over the left field wall to tie the game. A sacrifice fly three batters later drew in the go-ahead run for the visitors, who shut down the Tritons in the bottom of the inning to snag another win.
