Tritons Fall in Game Two to Mustangs

UC San Diego fell to Cal Poly, 8-3, on Saturday afternoon

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—UC San Diego baseball fell to Cal Poly, 8-3, on Saturday afternoon in Baggett Stadium. The Tritons (14-15, 5-6 Big West) moved to 0-2 in the weekend series with the Mustangs (21-8, 11-0 Big West).
 
Alex Leopard led the team offensively, going 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBI, while Patrick Hackworth finished 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored and Cooper Thacker went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Anthony Potestio was credited with the other RBI for the Tritons who left 13 runners stranded compared to three for the Mustangs. 
 
Nic Gregson (0-1) pitched 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout. Spencer Seid went 4.0 innings in relief, giving up five runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
For the second game, the Tritons were first to score, getting on the board in the top of the second with an RBI single by Leopard. The Mustangs quickly responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 1-1.
 
Cal Poly took the lead an inning later with a pair of RBI singles to make it 3-1. The Mustangs added to their lead in fifth inning with a two-run homer to pull in front, 5-1. 
 
The Tritons rallied in the top of the sixth, advancing two runners into scoring position with one out. Leopard scored Hackworth with a ground-out to third base and Potestio knocked a single through the left side to score Thacker and cut the deficit to two, 5-3. However, the Mustangs got both runs back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer and added another run an inning later to make it 8-3.
 
UC San Diego mounted one final rally in the ninth inning, loading the bases with two outs. However, a fly-out ended the inning without a run and the Tritons dropped game two of the series, leaving 13 runners stranded in the contest.

The Tritons will wrap up the weekend at Cal Poly in the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will not be broadcast, but live statistics will be available via UCSDTritons.com.
