Tritons Head to San Luis Obispo

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego softball remains on the road as they head to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo for a three-game series on April 18 and 19. Beginning with a doubleheader on Friday starting at 3 p.m. and will wrap on Saturday in a single matchup set for 12 p.m. All three games will be live on ESPN+ and live statistics available on UCSDTritons.com.

MATCHUPS
Cal Poly enters the week 8-30 overall and 3-15 in the Big West. The Mustangs are on a two-game losing streak after dropping the series to UC Riverside last weekend. At the plate, Maddy Bermudez leads the Mustangs with a .289 batting average with 13 runs scored and Julia Barnett has knocked in a team-high 17 runs on a .272 batting average. Leading the defense, Kate Judy has gone to work over 82.2 innings of work with 44 strikeouts and a 3.64 ERA. The right-hander has only allowed 43 earned runs in her 22 appearances, imposing a .288 batting average on her opponents.
 
UC San Diego enters the week on a one-game losing streak after taking the road series over UC Davis and dropping the finale last Saturday. The Tritons are 10-25 overall with an 8-10 conference record. Jaden Hill leads the gold and blue with a .389 batting average and 13 runs scored in her 25 games played. Alexa DeMarse adds her bat with a .478 slugging percentage and 16 runs batted in on three doubles and five home runs. UC San Diego's ace, India Caldwell has tossed 89 strikeouts over 119 innings of work with a 3.86 ERA. In her 28 appearances, six have been complete games, and the right-hander has only allowed 51 earned runs to force a .285 batting average on her opponents.

LAST TIME OUT
UC Davis (13-28) defeated UC San Diego (10-25) 12-4 on Saturday at La Rue Field, highlighted by a six-run fourth inning.
 
Elise Nishimura stood out for the Tritons, scoring two runs and hitting a double, contributing to her team's efforts. Haley Garcia showcased her offensive skills by securing one hit and one RBI, alongside a sacrifice hit. Alexis Jimenez contributed an RBI despite not recording a hit, demonstrating her ability to drive in runs during clutch situations. Alexa DeMarse made her presence felt on the field with three assists and added to the offensive tally with one hit and one run.
 
CALDWELL EARNS BIG WEST WEEKLY HONORS
UC San Diego's India Caldwell was named Big West Pitcher of the Week on Monday, March 24 for her outstanding performance over the weekend. 
 
The Fallbrook product helped the Tritons to their first Big West series win and sweep this season over UC Riverside.
 
Earning three wins this weekend, India Caldwell posted a 0.00 ERA tossing a complete game shutout for a total of 12 innings of work. The right-hander gave up five hits and two walks while striking out 13 and giving up no extra base hits.
 
Caldwell is the first Triton recognized for weekly honors in 2025 and the 8th all-time.
 
CALDWELL NAMED TO BIG WEST PRESEASON TEAM
UC San Diego softball was selected to finish sixth in the Big West as announced in the 2025 Big West Softball Preseason Poll on Thursday afternoon. The Tritons were awarded 43 points by the conference's head coaches and senior, India Caldwell was named to the preseason team.
 
The Fallbrook product led the gold and blue defense from in the circle, tossing 105 strikeouts over 171.1 innings pitched. The right-hander forced a .277 batting average with only 52 walks and 66 earned runs given up in her 16 complete games pitched.
 
WHO'S BACK?
The team is returning 10 players, five seniors: Morgan Eng, India Caldwell, Reilly Erickson, Alexa DeMarse, and Marissa Hassis; four juniors: KayLeigh Coberly, Lily Hermosillo, Hannah Allen, and Claire Adams; one sophomore: Jackie Tremper.
 
NEW FACES
Head coach Nikki Palmer brought in six transfers, one senior, Jaden Hill, one junior, Haley Garcia, and four sophomores: Zara Wasserman, Gabrielle Flores, Elise Nishimura, and Chloe Lesko. Plus, nine true freshmen will don the gold and blue this season: Alyssa Doucette, Scarlette Chapman, Lexi Ellenwood, Ryanna Alano, Samantha Womack, Alexis Jimenez, Lauren Rozell, Emma Umemura, and Callie Christian.
