Eighth Inning Rally Lifts Tritons Past Utah in Tony Gwynn Legacy

UC San Diego wins 9-8, hands Utes first loss

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Gabe Camacho ripped a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth as UC San Diego rallied for a 9-8 comeback victory over Utah Sunday evening at Triton Ballpark. The Tritons (4-3) went a perfect 3-0 in the Tony Gwynn Legacy. The loss was Utah's first of the season; the Utes are 6-1.
 
Noah Lazuka had a strong performance for the Tritons, registering four hits and scoring three runs, while also contributing a double and an RBI. Alex Leopard stood out with a home run and a triple, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Camacho made significant contributions with two RBIs, securing a hit and getting on base with a hit by pitch.
 
On the mound, Garrett Davidson earned the win, pitching 1 1/3 innings without allowing any runs or walks, while Devon King retired the final two batters with the tying run on third to notch his first save.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons found their offensive stride in the third inning, opening the scoring with a two-run homer by Leopard, bringing in Lazuka, who had previously doubled. This gave the Tritons a 2-0 lead.
 
The sixth inning was a key turning point, where Patrick Hackworth delivered a two-RBI double, followed by an RBI single from Lazuka, and a triple by Leopard, which brought in another run, widening the lead to 6-5.
 
In the eighth inning, the Tritons further extended their advantage when Camacho hit a two-RBI single, adding to their tally and bringing the score to 9-8. The Tritons' pitching and defense held firm in the ninth inning, preventing any scoring from the Utes, securing a 9-8 victory with a total of 12 hits.
