LA JOLLA, Calif.—After averaging nearly a double-double for UC San Diego women's basketball,
Sumayah Sugapong was named Big West Player of the Week, as announced Monday by the conference.
It is the fourth conference weekly award of the season for Sugapong—fifth of her career—and the ninth weekly nod for UC San Diego since joining the Big West in 2020-21.
Sugapong averaged 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds to lead UC San Diego to another 2-0 week, moving the Tritons into third place in the Big West standings. The sophomore guard finished the week with 35 total points, 19 rebounds, six assists, five steals, one block and went 8-for-10 at the free throw line.
Sugapong recorded her first career double-double in a 65-63 victory at UC Davis, finishing with a team-high 23 points and a career-best 10 rebounds. She nearly had a another double-double in a 63-45 victory over Cal State Bakersfield, collecting a team-best 12 points and nine boards and adding four steals, four assists and one block in the contest.
Sugapong has now tallied seven 20-point performances this season. She ranks first in the conference in assists (98 total, 3.8 per game), field goal attempts (389) and steals (66 total, 2.54 per game) and 22nd nationally in total steals. Sugapong also ranks second in total points (374) and fourth in free-throw percentage (78.8 percent).
UC San Diego will play host to Cal Poly on Thursday at 7 p.m. before traveling to face Big West first-place Hawai'i on Saturday at 9 p.m. PT. The games will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live statistics will be available via UCSDTritons.com.
