Tritons Blank Sagehens in 2025 Home Opener

UC San Diego wins doubles point and four singles courts on the way to victory

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego blanked Pomona-Pitzer by a 5-0 score in the Tritons' home opener Saturday morning at Northview Tennis Courts in La Jolla. The Sagehens are ranked third nationally in the ITA's preseason Division III rankings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In doubles action, seniors Adriana Tabares and Kelly Leung got the day started with a 6-1 victory at No. 2. UC San Diego clinched the doubles point when senior captain Katelyn Vu and junior Grace Gamal earned a 6-4 triumph on court three.
 
In singles action, Vu was a 6-4, 6-1 winner at sixth singles, with Tabares earning a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 5. Leung clinched the match for the Tritons with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4. Concurrently, senior Naomi Nguyen won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 to make the score 5-0 UC San Diego.
 
Other UC San Diego matches Saturday included Julia Haynes leading 6-3, 2-0 at No. 1 and Grace Gamal on top 7-6 (7-5), 3-0 on court two when play was halted.
 
QUOTABLE
"This was a good solid win and quality performance overall," said UC San Diego head coach Sebastian Bader. "The team worked through challenges in each match and found ways to set themselves up for success. It was a fun first official home match, and we will look to build on this performance and keep getting better."
 
TRITON TIDBITS
  • UC San Diego has now won three straight over the Sagehens.
  • Naomi Nguyen, Kelly Leung, Adriana Tabares, and Katelyn Vu all won their first singles matches of the season.
  • For Vu, the win was her 22nd career singles triumph. She's the program's all-time Division I singles wins leader.
  • Pomona-Pitzer will take on Nevada later Saturday on the UC San Diego campus.

UC San Diego will host Nevada Sunday morning from Northview Tennis Courts. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. in La Jolla. Admission is free, though parking permits are required on the UC San Diego campus.
