PORTLAND— UC San Diego women's basketball defeated Portland State, 94-64, on Sunday afternoon in Viking Pavilion. The Tritons (4-4) scored their most points against a Division I opponent—surpassing the previous mark of 90—to top the Vikings (2-5).
Sabrina Ma led the Tritons with her second 20-point game of the week, finishing with 21 points and 6-for-9 from beyond the arc.
Erin Condron finished just shy of her second double-double in as many games, recording 17 points and nine boards.
Rosa Smith also tallied 17 points, adding five rebounds and four assists.
Dymonique Maxie set the Tritons' Division I program record with 11 assists in the contest, also leading the team with three steals along with
Makayla Rose.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a close 5-3 start to the opening quarter, the Tritons caught fire scoring 12 unanswered points that included two 3-pointers by Ma. A free throw by Condron after being fouled on a made layup gave UC San Diego a 22-7 advantage. Another three from Ma and a three-point play by Smith gave the Tritons their largest lead of the period, 28-12. A jumper by Smith in the final 30 seconds gave UC San Diego a 30-14 advantage at the first quarter break. Ma put up 12 points, while Condron tallied 11 in the opening period.
The Vikings rallied early in the second period, putting together a 9-3 scoring run to cut the lead to ten, 33-23. The Tritons responded with a 9-0 run of their own, highlighted by five points from Smith to make it 42-23. Smith hit a bank-shot three at the buzzer to give UC San Diego a 45-25 lead at halftime.
UC San Diego came out strong to begin the second half, putting together a 9-2 scoring run to open the third quarter. Ma knocked down 3-pointers on consecutive possessions for the Tritons to extend a 5-for-5 streak from beyond the arc. Niya Price and Ma down the stretch. A jumper by
Tatum Jones gave the Tritons their largest lead of the contest, 70-39, with under two minutes left in the period. UC San Diego maintained the pressure down the stretch and took a 72-45 advantage into the final quarter break.
Portland State put together a 6-2 run to begin the final quarter before the teams traded baskets for most of the period. Back-to-back layups by
Damilola Sule and a three-point play by Price gave the Tritons an 88-60 advantage with two minutes to play. UC San Diego continued to play strong down the stretch on its way to the 94-64 victory.
