UC San Diego dropped an 80-69 contest to the Dons

SAN FRANCISCO— UC San Diego women's basketball fell to San Francisco, 80-69, on Sunday afternoon in War Memorial Gym. After trailing by as many as 17, the Tritons (1-3) cut the deficit to six with under a minute to play but were unable to complete the comeback against the Dons (2-2).

Condron also led the team in rebounds (6) and assists (3), while Fairwell and Smith finished with five rebounds each. Fairwell collected a team-best three steals, while Smith, Dymonique Maxie and Makayla Rose finished with two apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons started on their back foot after falling behind 8-0 to start the contest. A pair of jumpers from Condron and Smith with under three minutes remaining made it a one-score game, 14-11. The Dons responded with back-to-back buckets of their own to stall UC San Diego's momentum. The Tritons trailed USF, 18-13, at the first quarter break.

The teams traded baskets to a 26-23 Dons advantage midway through the second quarter. San Francisco found its rhythm, going on a 14-2 scoring run to create separation, 40-25. The Tritons rallied late in the quarter, scoring seven unanswered—including five from Smith—but USF still took a 44-34 lead into halftime.

The Dons carried the momentum into the third quarter, maintaining a double-figure lead for most of the period. The Tritons found some success beyond the arc with a pair of threes by Fairwell and one from Ma to keep the game within reach, 62-51. San Fracisco scored five points in the final minute to lead, 67-51, at the final quarter break.

UC San Diego opened the final period with a seven-point run to make it 67-58 with just over five minutes to play. A timely three by Makayla Rose cut the deficit to six with under a minute remaining, but the Tritons went cold from the floor, missing their final four shots and ultimately falling, 80-69.
