LA JOLLA, Calif.—After leading UC San Diego women's basketball to another 2-0 week,
Sumayah Sugapong was named Big West Player of the Week, as announced Monday by the conference.
Â
It is the third conference weekly award of the season for Sugapong—fourth of her career—and the eighth weekly nod for UC San Diego since joining the Big West in 2020-21. The Tritons take home back-to-back awards for the first time ever after
Sabrina Ma was honored with the same recognition last week.
Â
Sugapong averaged 22.0 points to lead UC San Diego to a 2-0 weekend on the road. The San Diego native also averaged 6.5 rebounds and collected seven assists and three steals for the Tritons.Â
Â
On Thursday, Sugapong collected a game-high 21 points in a 62-43 victory at UC Santa Barbara, finishing 11-of-12 from the free throw line and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. She also led the team with three assists and added a career-best eight rebounds. In Saturday's 82-44 victory at CSUN, Sugapong finished two-points shy of her career high with 23, going 5-for-8 from three-point range and 8-for-16 from the floor. She also led the team with four assists and finished second with five boards.Â
Â
Sugapong has now tallied five 20-point performances this season. She ranks first in the conference in assists (82 total, 3.9 per game), field goal attempts (298) and steals (52 total, 2.48 per game) and 31st nationally in total steals. Sugapong also ranks third in total points (287) and fourth in free-throw percentage (80 percent).
Â
UC San Diego will play host to Big West first-place Hawai'i on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Tritons lone contest of the week. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live statistics will be available via UCSDTritons.com.
