SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC San Diego got a late goal from senior captain
Courtney Hilliard, but the Tritons were unable to net the equalizer in a 2-1 setback to UC Santa Barbara Thursday night in a Big West showdown at Harder Stadium. With the victory, the Gauchos improved to 2-0 in The Big West (4-3-4 overall) while the Tritons (2-7-2, 0-1-1 Big West) have dropped two straight.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After UC Santa Barbara had a couple of early scoring chances, the Tritons controlled possession for much of the first half. In the 11th minute, senior
Raquel Kalpakoff drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box. Grad transfer
Skylar Enge and junior
Talisa Lin lined up to take the free kick, and it was Lin who bent one in with tremendous pace – but the ball sailed just over the crossbar to keep the match scoreless.
Â
Barely a minute after Lin's shot, junior
Lindsey Park had two scoring chances, but her first shot was stopped by the Gauchos and the second was just off target.
Â
In the 42nd minute, UC San Diego lost possession near midfield and the Gauchos capitalized on the turnover. Chayse Yu scored her second goal of the season on a breakaway to give UC Santa Barbara a 1-0 halftime lead. The Tritons held an 8-4 shots advantage in the first half.
Â
After halftime, UC Santa Barbara stepped up its pressure and created some scoring chances. The Gauchos broke through in the 73rd minute as O'Callaghan Liu scored to put the home team on top, 2-0. Â
Â
Trailing by two late, the Tritons were undeterred. Sophomore
Ellie Trevino got a look from inside the 18. Her shot was deflected, and Hilliard cleaned it up for the Triton goal.
Â
UC San Diego applied pressure late, but the Tritons were unable to net the equalizer.

QUOTABLE
"Late in the first half I thought we got complacent and teams with athleticism like Santa Barbara are going to capitalize if we let up. We did, and they did," said UC San Diego head coach
Kristin Jones '04. "We're playing really good soccer for stretches, but because some results haven't gone our way, we need to learn that that's not good enough. We have to develop that killer instinct to win."
