LA JOLLA, Calif. – Visiting California Baptist got a goal off a deflection in the 66th minute and made that hold up, as the Lancers held off UC San Diego by a 1-0 score Sunday afternoon at Triton Soccer Stadium.
The Lancers improved to 3-3 with the victory, while UC San Diego dropped to 1-4 with Sunday's setback.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Most of the first half was played in the middle third and neither team broke through. The Tritons officially took five shots, though only one was on frame – and that was stopped by CBU keeper Mikayla O'Brien. On the other end, UC San Diego sophomore goalkeeper
Ginny Fronk faced her lone first half shot in the 40th minute, and she lunged forward to make a diving stop.
Â
The Tritons had the only two corner kicks of the match over the first 45 minutes of action.
Â
The Lancers broke the scoreless deadlock in the 66th minute when Kaylee Hauck fired a rocket from the top of the box that deflected off a Triton defender and ricocheted into the back of the net. That goal held up, propelling the visitors to their second win of the week.
Â
UC San Diego had a couple of scoring chances down the stretch but the Tritons were unable to break through and convert the equalizer.

QUOTABLE
"This had all the makings of a 1-0 kind of game from the start," said UC San Diego head coach
Kristin Jones '04. "I thought we lacked some energy and intensity that we needed and credit [California Baptist] for breaking through. We'll have to regroup and get ready for a challenging road trip next week."
