Tritons Fall in Finale at Northridge

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – UC San Diego softball dropped the finale vs. CSUN on Saturday afternoon in a heartbreaking 9-7 decision. The Matadors made the comeback after being down 6-0 through three innings.

The Tritons drop to 9-14 and seventh in Big West play and 16-32 overall. CSUN improves to 8-16 in conference play and 24-24 overall.

At the plate, leadoff hitter Morgan Eng led the Tritons going 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Hailey Mulligan had a productive day going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and another batted in. Tossing her 16th complete game of the season, India Caldwell allowed nine runs on 14 hits with three walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Getting on the board early, the Tritons put three runs up in the top of the first inning. Morgan Eng got it going in the first at-bat with a bunt. She immediately stole second and was advanced again to third on a ground out. Hailey Mulligan then proceeded to crack her eighth double of the season to plate Eng, 1-0. A Matador error allowed Deena Pederson to reach and Mulligan to move ahead to third. Pederson then stole second during Brooklyn Lee's at-bat. The freshman then laced a single up the middle to bring in Mulligan and Pederson, 3-0.

UC San Diego added three more runs in the top of the third to extend their lead, 6-0. This time Mulligan started the inning with a single sent out to right field. Pederson's double out to left center allowed Mulligan to score from first, 4-0. Alexa DeMarse joined in her own hit out to left center, scoring Pederson from second. Zoë Richards got DeMarse into scoring position and then a fly out moved her to third. She then scored as Marissa Hassis sent a shot up the middle to advance Richards and score DeMarse, 6-0. The Tritons managed to load the bases, but a fielder's choice ended the inning.

CSUN responded in the bottom with three of their own runs to cut the deficit in half, 6-3. Then added three more in the fourth to tie the game up at 6-6. In the fifth, the home team went ahead by one, 7-6.

The Tritons looked to retake the lead and hold it in the final two innings as they tied the game in the top of the sixth. Eng started the inning with a single laced through the right side. She was followed by Mariah Melendez who sent a single out to right field and then advanced to second on the throw. Eng made it to third safely and then scored on the CSUN throwing error, 7-7. A pitching change proved effective as Melendez was able to make it third on a ground out, but then the next two Tritons fell, leaving the go ahead run stranded 60 feet from home.

The Matadors secured the victory with two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth and retired the gold and blue in order in the top of the seventh.
