LA JOLLA, Calif.— UC San Diego baseball won its 30th game of the 2024 season and secured the series against Cal Poly after taking game two by a score of 12-7 on Saturday afternoon in Triton Ballpark. The Tritons (30-22, 17-12 Big West) are now 9-3 all-time against the Mustangs (32-21, 17-9 Big West) and 2-0 in the weekend series.

Six players recorded RBIs on the day, with
Emiliano Gonzalez (2-for-4) and
Nick Costello (1-for-3) leading with three apiece.
Benjamin Rosengard (3-for-4) and
Anthony Potestio (3-for-4) each had two RBIs, while
Brock Kleszcz (0-for-3) and
Noah Sudyka (2-for-4) each got one. Â

Zach Ernisse started at pitcher for the Tritons, giving up a hit, three runs, and three walks. In three innings,
Spencer Seid (5-2) conceded three hits, three runs, and threw two strikeouts to earn the victory.
Xavier Franco stepped in to close the sixth inning, giving up a hit, before
Landon Marchetti came in. His two innings consisted of three hits, a run, and a walk.
Izaak Martinez closed the game in the final inning, allowing one hit.Â

HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Cal Poly got on the board first with an infield hit in the opening inning. The 1-0 lead was quickly leveled in the bottom of the inning via a Potestio sacrifice flyout that sent Costello home. Gonzalez then hit a two-run homer over right field wall to make it 3-1.Â

Costello followed suit in the second inning with a centerfield home run to bring Rosengard and Sudyka home. Gonzalez collected another RBI with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-1.Â

The Mustangs remained competitive, sending home two runners in the third inning, making it 7-3. Hackworth responded with a leadoff triple, making it 8-3 with a Kleszcz sacrifice flyout.Â

Rosengard was the next to get it over the right field fence in the fifth inning, bringing home Hackworth with him to make it 10-3, Tritons. Potestio singled three batters later to bring in Sudyka and make it 11-3.Â

After entering in the third inning, Seid retired eight Mustangs in order before Cal Poly rallied in the top of the sixth. The visitors added three runs thanks to a pair of RBI singles and a wild pitch, making it 11-6. In the bottom of the inning, Sudyka brought in Kleszcz with an infield single to bring the score to 12-6 to finish the sixth inning.Â

Cal Poly scraped another run together with a single in the seventh inning to make it 12-7.Â

Marchetti retired the Mustangs in order in the eighth and after giving up a leadoff single in the ninth, Martinez collected three quick outs in succession to close out the contest.

TRITON TIDBITSÂ
- Emiliano Gonzalez hit his sixth, Benjamin Rosengard got his third, and Nick Costello earned his tenth home run of the season.Â
- Costello now ranks fourth in the Big West in home runs and Gonzalez ranks ninth in runs batted in.
- Patrick Hackworth hit his second triple of the season and is now tied with Benjamin Rosengard for the team lead in that category.
- It was the seventh Big West series win of the season for the Tritons and 10th overall in 2024.
- For the second consecutive season, the Tritons recorded 30 wins in just their fourth season of Division I competition.
- UC San Diego moved to 9-3 in the all-time series with Cal Poly and 2-0 on the weekend.
