HOW IT HAPPENED
The Toreros got on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. USD threatened again in the top of the third with a runner on third and two outs but Marchetti forced a fly-out to right field to end the inning without a run.
Â
UC San Diego got its first opportunity in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two on and two outs, Kleszcz singled to center field to bring in Rosengard and even the game, 1-1.Â
Â
In the fifth, the Toreros advanced a runner to third with one out, but a quick throw home on a grounder to
Doyle Kane kept the game tied. USD advanced a second runner to third with two outs, but again the Triton defense responded with
Anthony Potestio catching the runner stealing second in a run down to end the threat without a run.
Â
UC San Diego answered in the bottom of the inning, advancing a runner to third with two outs but a strikeout ended the inning and kept the Tritons off the board.
Â
USD took the lead again in the sixth inning with an RBI double and threatened more with two runners in scoring position and one out. Seid recorded a strikeout and forced a first-pitch fly-out to right field to limit the Toreros to one run, 2-1.
Â
A pair of singles by Rosengard and Kleszcz in the bottom of the sixth got a runner in scoring position for the Tritons with two outs, but UC San Diego was unable to cash in once again.
Â
After the Tritons held the USD batters in check for most of the contest, the Toreros broke through in the top of the eighth, scoring four runs on four hits and one error to add to the lead. USD added one more run in the top of the ninth to make it 7-1.Â
