LOS ANGELES—UC San Diego baseball fell to USC, 5-0, on Wednesday evening at LMU's Page Stadium. The Tritons (19-7) moved to 1-2 in the all-time series with the Trojans (12-16).
Â
In his first collegiate start, freshman
Landon Marchetti (1-1) pitched 3.2 innings, allowing one run on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Michael Crossland was the only Triton to record a hit in the contest, finishing the night 2-for-4.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Marchetti was strong to start the contest, holding the Trojans off the board in the first three innings and not allowing an extra-base hit. USC got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double. With runners on the corners and two outs,
Devon King recorded a strikeout to keep it a one-run ballgame.
Â
The Tritons were quiet at the plate through the first five innings, getting two total base runners by way of a walk and a single. However, UC San Diego was unable to capitalize and trailed 1-0.Â
Â
USC added to its lead in the fifth, scoring two runs on a bases-loaded single through the left side to make it 3-0. The Trojans threatened for more with two on and one out, but the Tritons defense got two quick outs and limited the damage.Â
Â
UC San Diego got its only runner in scoring position in the top of the sixth after
Noah Sudyka reached on a USC error and advanced to second with two-outs. However, the Tritons were unable to cash in once again.
Â
The Trojans got on the board once again in the bottom of the sixth, adding one run on a sac-fly. USC tacked on another run in the seventh with an RBI single to lead, 5-0.
Â
The Tritons were retired in order in the seventh and eighth, before Crossland knocked a two-out single in the ninth. However, UC San Diego was unable to rally any further.
